Rotating potentiometer transducers




The PR20 transducers convert rotary motion into a resistance variation, ensuring high precision and reliability for industrial applications.

Main features:

• Through-hollow shaft with Ø20 mm  bore.

• Shock-resistant, self-extinguishing housing, resistant to solvents, gasoline, oils, and grease.

• Precision rotary potentiometer driven by a transmission system connected to the drive shaft.

• Available with 1, 3, 5, or 10-turn potentiometers, with gear ratios in multiplication or reduction.

• Gear reducer with clutch for potentiometer protection.

• For proper use, it is essential to know the number of revolutions the drive shaft must complete to cover the total measuring stroke (see Pitch table).

Available versions:

• PR20: cable output.

• PR20C: connector output.

• PR20-I: integrated analog interface, 24V DC power supply, 4-20mA output.

• PR20-V: integrated analog interface, 24V DC power supply, 0-10V output.

• PR20-RS485: RS485 Modbus RTU serial interface for position measurement and diagnostic data transmission to the PLC. user guidance with 3 fully customizable status LEDs (red/green). Compatible with communication protocols: Profinet, EthernetIP, Powerlink, and EtherCAT via GatewayPR20.

Applications:

When combined with an electronic display (V4P, P3X, it provides an economical and effective measurement system for position control in machine tools, automation, woodworking, marble processing, and other material machining, with a maximum resolution of ±0.1 mm

The P Interface turns the signal supplied by a potentiometric transducer into current 0-20 mA, 4-20 mA or voltage 0-10Vdc.
Its typical employment is the current or voltage transmission of signals supplied by a remote potentiometric transducer to remote supervision systems.
Special features of the P interface are its low cost and simple setting: activating two trimmers it’s possible to refer the entire output range to the stroke of the poten-tiometer effectivly employed.
The instrument is carried out in a 3-module case for assembling on DIN EN50022 guide.

The instruments of the V_P series are multifunction microprocessor display units with input from potentiometric transducer that are particularly indicated for the measurement of linear and angular dimensions. 
• V4P: the measured value can be compared with 2 or 3 alarms settable for enabling many relays whose status is displayed by LEDs. Two analog outputs, a voltage 0-10V or -10 to +10 V, the other 4 ÷ 20mA 12-bit resolution, and its possible to configure the instrument and check its status via serial interface RS485 with MODBUS RTU protocol.

The P_X positioning units serie are programmable microprocessor single-axis positioner with relay or analogue outputs.
• P3X: processes signals provided by potentiometric position transducers linear or rotary. The 16-key keyboard with 6 operation indicators make it simple and easy to use and the setup of the positioner.

                                      TRANSMISSION RATIO CALCULATION

To optimize the precision, it is essential to select a transmission ratio and potentiometer combination that provides a slightly higher number of turns than required to cover the full stroke.
Available potentiometers:
1 turn (340°) - 3 turns (1080°) - 5 turns (1800°) - 10 turns (3600°)
Each potentiometer can be paired with a reduction or multiplication transmission ratio from the available options:
Multiplication: 1/3 - 1/2
Reduction: 1/1 - 3.3/1 - 10/1 - 12/1 - 18/1 - 24/1 - 30/1 - 54/1 - 72/1 - 90/1

 

                                                     PRACTICAL EXAMPLES

 

Example 1. - Calculation with a known number of turns

The transducer must complete 230 total turns to cover the full potentiometer stroke.
Choice: 10-turn potentiometer with a 24/1 transmission ratio
Calculation: 24 × 10 = 240 turns
➜ A small surplus of turns is always recommended to ensure a safety margin

 

Example 2. - Calculation with known distance and pitch

A screw with a 4 mm pitch must travel a distance of 550 mm.
Required turns calculation:
550 ÷ 4 = 137.5 turns
Selection: 5-turn potentiometer with a 30/1 transmission ratio
Calculation: 30 × 5 = 150 available turns

Example 3. - Angular displacement measurement

An angular displacement of 105° must be measured.
Selection: 1-turn potentiometer (340°) with a 1/3 multiplication ratio
Calculation: 340 ÷ 3 = 113.5° available 
➜ For angular measurements, a 1-turn potentiometer is preferable for higher accuracy
